According to him, fixating on commercial success can influence the type of films he wants to create, thinking they’ll create an emotional and ultimate box office collection.Hirani explained that it typically takes three to four years to make a film, and this time, he invested five years in crafting the story for “Dunki.” His approach is to create a film regardless of its fate, understanding that different audiences may respond differently. He emphasized India’s vastness, stating that all kinds of audiences exist, each with their own preferences.
Expressing his sentiments about making “Dunki,” Hirani revealed that he wasn’t afraid during the process and advised against worrying about box office numbers. He acknowledged the film’s success, describing it as an Indian story not explored in Hindi cinema before. He stressed that one should not be overly concerned about box office figures, cautioning against the trap of excessive attention.

Principal photography for Dunki commenced in April 2022, taking the crew to various locations worldwide, including Mumbai, Jabalpur, Kashmir, Budapest, London, Jeddah, and Neom. According to Hirani, “Dunki” also tells the story of returning home.
He shared that many individuals leave their homes with the intention of eventually returning; the idea is often to make money abroad and retire in their own country. To him, the home concept holds great emotional significance and is a major source of inspiration. During his research for “Dunki,” Hirani discovered the prevalence of English-speaking classes in Punjab, where students aim to learn the language to fulfill their dream of obtaining a visa.
Hirani found this world fascinating and revealed that he went undercover to attend these classes during the COVID-19 pandemic. He would wear a mask and participate, even going to villages where he observed that many had become sparsely populated with only older residents as younger people had left. He interacted with families and children and witnessed aircraft on top of houses.
Working with Shah Rukh Khan, his first choice for the 2003 film “Munna Bhai M.B.B.S” and the 2009 hit “3 Idiots,” was a long-cherished dream for Hirani. Interestingly, he mentioned that his mother was more thrilled about collaborating with the superstar than he was about making an extremely box office collection.
The ensemble cast, led by Shah Rukh Khan, delivers memorable performances that add depth to the characters. After my last movie, ‘Sanju,’ Shah Rukh Khan and I started having more frequent meetings. When work slowed down due to COVID-19, he asked about my ongoing projects. I shared a couple of ideas, and he got intrigued by one. He said, “If this idea develops, let’s work on it.”It all happened naturally, and I thoroughly enjoyed working with him.
Describing Shah Rukh, my writer Abhijat Joshi says, ‘This man is pure love.’ Working with him not only as an actor but also as a person was a joyful experience. Hirani mentioned that Shah Rukh found the role of Hardy, a character not fluent in English, challenging. Unlike other actors who naturally fit roles like Taapsee Pannu.
